Sexually Transmitted Disease

The Disease Surveillance Program will receive case notifications from the state, local county health departments, labs, providers, or calls from a person who suspects an infection. DSP will confirm the infection and educate on modes of transmission, signs and symptoms, prevention, and treatment for the infection. DSP will identify any contacts and confidentially notify partners and offer treatment to both the index case and partners.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (or Sexually Transmitted Infections) are infections caused by a virus, bacteria, fungus, or parasite. People get them through sexual contact. Many STIs have no symptoms or may only cause mild symptoms, so people can have an infection but not know they are infected. That’s why getting tested for STI’s is important if you are having sex. If you receive a positive STI diagnosis, there are treatments available for STI’s and some can be cured entirely. What is PrEP?

What is PEP?

PEP is a treatment option for those that are concerned or at high risk of getting HIV AFTER having had an exposure with someone who may have an HIV infection. What is DoxyPEP?

Doxycycline is an antibiotic that can be taken after sex to help some people reduce the chances of getting syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea. The CDC recommends DoxyPEP for all gay, bisexual men, and transgender women who have had an STI infection in the last 12 months. DoxyPEP must be taken within 3 days (72 hours) of the exposure. What is Syphilis?

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that can cause serious health problems without treatment. Each stage of syphilis can have different signs and symptoms, including having no visible signs or symptoms. What is Congenital Syphilis?

Congenital syphilis occurs when syphilis passes to babies during pregnancy. Congenital Syphilis can have major health impacts on babies. Congenital syphilis can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, prematurity, deformed bones, severe anemia, jaundice, brain and nerve problems, skin rashes, etc. Not all babies will have symptoms at birth but they should be treated right away to prevent the development of serious health problems. If you do not have syphilis, your baby will not get syphilis. We recommend prenatal testing at your first prenatal appointment, at your third trimester appointment, and at birth.
